Gernessa Homecare Services have since 2010 been actively involved in specialised high intensity nursing care at home. This high intensity nursing care is provided in lieu of hospitalisation and forms part of an out-of-hospital procedure. Gernessa Homecare Services has a growing network of around 15 high intensity patients that are cared for on a daily basis at home. This nursing care includes:

  • Nasal/Tracheal Suctioning and Stoma
  • Invasive and/or Non-Invasive Ventilation
  • Administration of Feedings via NG tube, PEG tube and Mickey tube
  • Continuous Oxygen Therapy and Monitoring
  • Pain Infusion and Monitoring

Gernessa Homecare Services works closely with the treating physician to prepare all necessary steps towards discharge planning. This includes obtaining medical aid authorisation towards the relevant equipment, the full time nursing care as well as the monthly medical consumables that will be needed to adhere to a high level of nursing at all times. Specialised patients are visited weekly or as scheduled by our Registered Nurses and clinical feedback is provided in the form of a progress report the both the relevant medical scheme as well as the referring physician.

Will my medical aid fund for private nursing care at home?

Payment by your medical aid will depend on the rules of you medical aid.

Most medical aids will not pay for frail care. There are some medical aids that will pay for rehabilitation after accidents and post-operative procedures as well as medical conditions like a stroke.

Gernessa is registered with the BHFS and functions with a practice number 0327050 that is recognised by all medical aids.

How to go about it:

  1. In order for the authorisation process to be set forth, a nursing evaluation must be done by a Gernessa Homecare Services registered nurse.
  2. Invasive and/or Non-Invasive Ventilation
  3. With all letters and evaluation information obtained, an authorisation will be requested based on clinical information and quotation together with procedure and ICD-10 codes.
  4. Feedback is provided within five to ten working days
  5. In the event where nursing care is pending prior to feedback from the scheme, no service will commence without granted authorisation.
  6. Post to the initial granted period a progress report will be sent to ensure prolonged authorisation subject to scheme rules and exclusions.

Kindly note that all schemes have daily rate limits and should this limit be below that of Gernessa Homecare Services rate, the patient/guarantor will be responsible for the balance.
